Serres Sylva®: Frequently Asked Questions

Serres Sylva is our next-generation suction bag designed to make fluid collection safer, easier, and more sustainable. It works seamlessly with the Serres Suction system and supports hospitals in delivering high-quality care while reducing the environmental impact of the operating room.

Serres Sylva® is a light, more resource-efficient design that doesn’t compromise safety or performance. It reduces the amount of plastic used, improves handling, and maintains the reliability that healthcare professionals expect from Serres.

Serres Sylva uses significantly less plastic than traditional hard suction canisters or suction bags. Its lighter design and efficient packaging reduce transport emissions and supports hospitals in lowering their environmental footprint.

Serres Sylva is a monomaterial solution designed to support circularity. Its materials fit well into existing plastic recycling streams with minimal need for separation. When emptied using the Serres Nemo device, the bag can be directed to recycling in regions with suitable waste‑sorting and recycling infrastructure. However, pre-treatment is required before recycling to ensure safe material processing.

Serres Sylva reduces environmental impact through smart material choices and system design. It is a lightweight monomaterial solution, which means it uses significantly less plastic than many semi‑rigid alternatives and fits well into existing plastic recycling streams with minimal separation.

When emptied with the Serres Nemo device, the bag becomes a strong candidate for recycling in regions with suitable waste‑sorting infrastructure. By lowering material use, simplifying recycling, and supporting circular practices, Serres Sylva offers a more sustainable option while still meeting the performance and safety requirements of clinical suction.

Serres Sylva is made from carefully selected monomaterial plastics that meet strict medical‑grade safety requirements. The suction bags contain no natural rubber latex, no PVC, and no phthalates such as DEHP, and they are free from substances listed as SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern). All materials are REACH and RoHS compliant, and the simplified monomaterial design supports safe use in clinical suction while enabling compatibility with existing plastic recycling streams.

One of the most effective ways to reduce liquid waste is to empty suction bags before disposal. Using the Serres Nemo surgical fluid disposal device, collected fluids can be safely emptied into the hospital’s wastewater system, leaving only a lightweight, emptied Serres Sylva bag to handle. This significantly decreases the volume and weight of liquid waste leaving the OR and supports more efficient, cost‑effective waste management.

Yes. The bag is suitable for use across the hospital, including the OR, ICU, ER, wards, and outpatient clinics.

Yes. During suction, the system automatically continues collecting fluid to the next connected Serres Sylva bag without any user intervention, ensuring uninterrupted suction. In a high‑volume setup with bags connected in series, the system provides up to 36 liters of capacity and performs reliably in demanding environments such as the OR, ICU, and ER, making it a cost‑efficient choice for urological and orthopedic operations

The biggest change staff will notice is a more streamlined workflow. Hard canisters and semi‑rigid suction bags often require pre‑assembly or removal of individual packaging, along with several manual connection steps. Serres Sylva replaces this with a simpler, faster setup that reduces handling time and helps teams work more efficiently. Its lightweight design also supports lower plastic waste generation in the operating room. Built to the high quality and reliability standards associated with Serres solutions, it supports confidence from the first use.

Yes. Serres Sylva is fully compatible with the Serres suction canisters and accessories you already use. This allows teams to adopt the new bag without changing their existing setup or workflows, making the transition smooth and cost‑efficient.

Yes. Serres Sylva suction bags are fully compatible with the Serres Nemo fluid disposal device. Using Sylva bags with Nemo allows the bags to be safely emptied before disposal, supporting both efficient OR workflows and the possibility of directing the emptied monomaterial bags to recycling where local infrastructure allows.

Trial requests can be arranged through your local Serres representative. They will help assess your ward’s needs, coordinate the trial setup, and provide any training or orientation materials required for a smooth start. If you are unsure who your local contact is, your regional distributor or Serres customer support can direct you to the right person.
